One of the most common themes on Hello Counselor is that of the husband who earns money for the household and feels justified to treat his wife however he sees fit. But the wife always seems to get the short end of the stick whether the husband is the breadwinner or not. On Episode 287 of Hello Counselor, which aired on August 22nd, 2016 with special guests Choi Taejoon, Lim Juhwan, and Hong Jinyoung, the first case revolves around a woman who has supported her family on her own for the past 10 years, doing everything from manual labor to factory work to make ends meet. She currently works at a restaurant from 9pm until noon, and one look at her is enough to see that she is tired asf.
What does her husband do all day? Absolutely nothing except watch TV, sleep and eat. And what does her younger son do all day? Also absolutely nothing except play video games. Her husband has done nothing for the past 10 years, starting from when his stress-related panic disorder was at its worse. He lost confidence in going to work and thus began to stay at home. And hasn’t budged since. Almost all of his symptoms have now disappeared over the course of these 10 years and yet he still hasn’t put in any effort to leave the house. Sure, he tries out jobs that his wife finds for him here and there, but he only lasts one or two days before calling it quits. Doesn’t sound like he’s trying that hard. He claims that him not being able to work and support his family is a source of stress and the reason why his sons don’t respect him. However, being a breadwinner or not shouldn’t define whether he’s a good father. People are unreasonably obsessed with masculinity and traditional family roles, and families that look different often get looked down upon. The father shouldn’t beat himself up just because his wife earns the money in the household, but he SHOULD feel ashamed by his lack of effort and unwillingness to change. If he actually went out every day and tried his best to support his family instead of drinking all alone at home, his sons probably wouldn’t disrespect him as much as they do now. Rather than freezing up under the pressure of expectations, he should focus on doing the best he can for his family in order to save it.
