I’m all for outspoken women who aren’t afraid to speak their minds and do what they want, but episode 268 of Hello Counselor from April 11th, 2016 revolves around a woman who might be a tad too much. She works at a hair salon and doesn’t care one bit about what others think. She gives her customers whatever haircuts she thinks best suits them regardless of their preferences. She lets her un-potty-trained dog roam the salon even though one of her coworkers is scared of dogs. She’s made her coworkers eat tofu every day for the past six months just because she’s on a diet. And after being told that she would receive good energy if her name were called a lot, she recorded herself saying her name over and over again in a monotone voice and forces everyone to listen to it on speakers every day at work.
Unsurprisingly, she’s driving her non-authoritative boss and poor coworkers insane. The problem here isn’t that she’s too opinionated or outspoken – her complete disregard for others makes it difficult for people to work with her and understand her. Her boss also doesn’t have the guts to fire her, so this whole mess is partially on him, as well.
There are so many issues that could be tackled, yet the hosts, along with guests Baek Sunghyung, Lee Hyun, and Hyojung and YooA from Oh My Girl, decide to focus instead on how to tone down her heavy makeup, which is supposedly scaring away customers. First, her makeup really isn’t that terrifying – she is far from the worst makeup offender out there. Second, her appearance is the least of her worries. Between shaving people’s heads bald without permission and starving her coworkers to death, a little extra eyeliner isn’t going to hurt anybody. Sure, she’s working in the service industry, but makeup is one thing that is an individual preference that helps her look and feel good, not put on for others. Let’s not forget about the selfishness and lack of compassion in the face of caked-on foundation and dark eyeshadow – unfortunately, a makeover isn’t going to solve the underlying issues here.
