We met GMNI last year at the K-Hip Hop Allstar Showcase at the Diamond Lounge in Annandale VA, and we sat down for an interview to hear what he had to say about life, music, 2016, and the coming new year.
For the ones who don’t know who you are, would you mind giving a little introduction?
GMNI: Korean-American rapper from San Diego.
2016 is almost over. If you were to pick a song, whether your own or another one you’ve been listening to, which would you choose?
GMNI: Meek Mill’s Shine.
Any particular reason?
GMNI: Because he talks about how he came from the bottom and now he’s on top. And he’s shining. He had to go through a lot of obstacles, and that’s like me. This year, I’ve gone through a lot of things that helped me develop and grow as an artist.
Is there any particular fan interaction that are memorable for you? I know you’re famous for online live streams.
GMNI: Honestly, every interaction, every touch, every scream, every hand-to-hand. Just interactions with the fans is a blessing. I’m grateful to have everyone because without them, there is no me. One I remember has to be when I went to Romania on my Europe tour. After the tour, they brought me a cake that said, ‘Please come to Romania’. I think that was dope.
Is here anything business, music, or personal-wise that you really struggled with? Or maybe very successful in?
GMNI: I have been in this music industry for a long industry compared to others. I’ve been through my share with promoters, and as an independent artist, there’s that struggle having no backing. Through that it made me stronger. Now, I’m here in this position, being able to see fans or even have a fan. Just growing.
Is there anything to look forward to in 2017?
GMNI: A lot. There is actually a lot that’s going to happen in 2017. I’m planning on releasing my album. All originals, no remixes. I’ve been known for doing a lot of remixes, but I want to go on the next level, to show my true colors as an artists, as a rapper. I’m not saying I’m not grateful for the remixes, but next year there’s going to be more shows. You’ll get to see me more and albums coming out. And I can’t wait to see the fans.
How do you feel about performing at the Diamond Lounge? Anyone in particular you’re excited to see on stage?
GMNI: It’s a blessing, y’know? I hope to see the fans here in Virginia. I get a lot of love on the east coast. I love it. I love it. With the performers and acts, I’m excited to see them. I may not look it, but I’m really tired right now *ha ha ha*
GMNI: Shout out to C.H.D Entertainment and I just wanna say I love my fans. 20126 was a year where I realized a lot and I saw my growth. I saw and experienced a lot. Again, shout outs to my fans and to C.H.D Entertainment.
